Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Gets Delayed Again

Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake Jumping

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake was declared in 2020, and Ubisoft announced that they were planning for a release in 2021. At the time, Ubisoft Pune was working on the game. But, since then a lot of water has flown down the river. The game eventually got delayed to a 2022 release window, and then to 2023. Now, Ubisoft is asking fans to not expect the game in 2023 either as they are “no longer targeting an FY23 release.” FY refers to the financial year.

What are Recent Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Developments?

Recently, a bunch of rumors surfaced on the internet suggesting that the remake of this classic icon was canceled. Leading video game vendors were delisting the title from their websites too. The game was removed from GameStop, as noticed by a Twitter leaker Wario64.

Lately, Ubisoft shifted the project from their studios in Pune and Mumbai to Montreal. If the game was close to cancellation, the studio would not put in the funds for this transfer.

The Project Transfer is the Biggest Ripple, Says Ubisoft

According to Ubisoft, the transfer of the project to Ubisoft Montreal is responsible for this delay. In a statement, one of their representatives said, “We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake.” This was closely followed by, “As a consequence, we are no longer targeting an FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted.”

Ubisoft also welcomes players to cancel their pre-orders. This is an extreme step and indicates that we will not be seeing the remake within the next couple of years at least. The company has not given any release date with this delay. Thus, we cannot say for sure when it will come out. Beyond this point, what remains is speculation.

Ubisoft ends its 2023 financial year on March 31st, 2023. With that in mind, the game could still be released in the 2023 calendar year, that is, if Ubisoft Montreal can finish the game by the time. But, we already see the points against this guess. The studio delisted the game, which could suggest a longer delay. We think if the delay makes the game better, it will be worth it. Ubisoft Montreal, along with Gameloft and Kudosoft originally developed the 2003 game. Thus, handing the project over to the studio that came up with the experience back in the day must be a step in the right direction.
