How to Make Green Dye in Minecraft

Green Dyed Room in Minecraft

Making a color dye, green included, plays a vital role in decoration in Minecraft. When we demonstrated making Minecraft concrete or mentioned wool in our guides, we pointed out that you can dye both items. Players can use 16 available color choices to change the appearance of fireworks, banners, candles, some mobs, glass, shulker boxes, terracotta, and beds. We have a strong suspicion the palette will expand, and so will the number of compatible items, especially since Minecraft is growing annually. While some colors can be substituted with ink sacs, lapis lazuli, cocoa beans, and bone meal, this one cannot. Thus, you must learn how to make green dye in Minecraft.

1. Materials needed for Minecraft green dye

Crafting green dye in Minecraft requires you to have the following items:

  • 1x Cactus
  • 1x Fuel of any kind
  • 1x Furnace

Cactus can be found in dry areas of Minecraft, mostly badlands biomes and deserts, as one block or multiple (“taller cacti”). In rare cases, you may find a potted cactus in an igloo that has a basement, and in desert village homes, between 1 and 4, inside chests. Finally, you may exchange 3 emeralds for 1 cactus to wandering traders. Fuel is easy to obtain since you can use a lot of flammable items: Wood Planks, Coal, Lava Bucket, and so on. Finally, you need to craft a Furnace from 8x of any type of cobblestone.

2. Instructions to make green dye in Minecraft

With mandatory items in tow, it’s time to place Furnace in front of you from the hotbar. After it’s on the ground, use the following buttons to open the interface:

  • On Pocket Edition (PE) — Tap the Furnace on the screen.
  • For Xbox —  Use the X button of your controller.
  • On Java Edition (Mac and PC), Windows 10 Edition, and Education Edition — Right-click the object on the ground.
  • For PlayStation — Press the square (□) button on your controller.
  • On Wii U and Nintendo Switch — Press the Y button on the console.

With the Furnace window open, you’ll notice three empty boxes, but only two are usable. Here’s the recipe for green dye in Minecraft:

  • Top left corner — Place Cactus.
  • Bottom left corner — Put the fuel of your choice, such as Coal or Wood Plank.

You will see the flames in-between the two icons starting to cook. Once the arrow loads to 100%, a Green Dye item will appear in the sole box on the right side. Drag it to your inventory or hotbar. Note that you can put up to 64x cactus in the first box at once. With enough fuel, it will cook while you’re away, and you can pick up a lot of Green Dye at once.

Add Green Dye to your inventory (Alternative)

If you don’t feel like collecting resources or crafting, adding Green Dye is a nifty alternative. You have two options:

1. Use Creative Mode

This is the easiest option. Simply switch to Creative Mode if you’re a server admin or have a single-player world using the /gamemode creative command. You can then open the inventory, select the compass in the top right corner (“Search Items”) and search for Green Dye before dragging it to your inventory or hotbar.

2. Enable Minecraft cheats and commands

Speaking of commands, you can use commands to spawn Green Dye in your inventory like this:

  • On Java Edition for PC and Mac 1.13 only (outdated!), the command is:
    /give @p cactus_green 1
  • For Java Edition between 1.14 and 1.19.1 and some Education, the command is:
    /give @p dye 1
  • On Java Edition 1.8-1.12, several Windows 10 and Education Edition, PlayStation 1.14.0, and Pocket Edition, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, all between 0.16.0-1.14.0, type the following:
    /give @p dye 1 2
  • For PE, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, 1.16.0-1.19.0, and some Education and Windows 10 versions, enter this command:
    /give @p green_dye 1 0

You can also type 64 instead of 1 to spawn 64x Green Dye in place of 1x.
