How Much Space Does Fortnite Take

How Much Space Fortnite Takes

Plan on installing Fortnite so you can start playing this battle-royale shooter game? We commend your decision, but to do that, you’ll obviously have to give up a portion of your storage space. But how big a portion? Epic Games intentionally doesn’t mention that part in their official system requirements for Fortnite on PC and Mac. There’s a good reason for it, but it’s still important to know. After all, no one wants to delete things and free the space up unless necessary. For that reason, we ran tests and came up with a precise answer to the question – how much space does Fortnite take?

Fortnite took this much space to install and play in 2021

Here’s the storage capacity required for Fortnite in 2021 based on the platform:

PC/Mac

Fortnite takes 29.2 GB of storage space on a PC or Mac. After patches and necessary updates, it might cross the 30 GB threshold by 1-3 GB.

PlayStation

Those on a PlayStation 4 can expect a Fortnite download size of around 7.5 GB, while the installation size will only be around 10 GB. On PlayStation 4 Pro, we only had to download one chunk that occupied 15 GB of our storage. Further updates were downloaded as we played. When we repeated the test on PlayStation 5, the game was playable at a download size of 19 GB, while the full game took 22.5 GB of the console storage space.

Xbox

On our Xbox One, we had to download 13 GB before running the game. During the installation, we had to download approximately 5 GB of data. In the test we ran on Xbox Series X, Fortnite took 22.14 GB of our storage capacity and was ready to play afterward.

Android

Fortnite cannot be downloaded from the Google Play Store. After downloading the official version from the Epic Games’ website, it only took a few seconds to download the .apk file. When we launched the game, Fortnite downloaded 3.2 GB in updates. This shows optimization since the game required 4 GB in updates in November 2020. The total size Fortnite took on Android was just over 3.3 GB.

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo doesn’t show size requirements while downloading, only time remaining. However, after the download finished and we launched the game, Fortnite took 7.1 GB on the SD card of our Nintendo Switch.

Can I expect the space Fortnite takes to increase in the future?

This is a common question players ask, and for a good reason. Between Fortnite’s release date on PC in 2017 and 2018, the game only took 18 GB on your HDD or SSD. But by October 2020, Fortnite’s storage capacity requirements for PC rose to between 90 GB and 100 GB! This invoked complaints from players, and poor optimization caused sluggish performance. To fix that, Fortnite developers cut down Fortnite file size by over 60 GB on PC in a v14.40 patch released on October 21, 2020, as seen below.

Please note the patch size will be larger than normal on PC (approx. 27 GB). This is to make optimizations on PC resulting in a massively reduced Fortnite file size (over 60 GB smaller), smaller downloads for future patches, and improved loading performance.

As you can see, the current storage requirement is 3 times lower. And while that space requirement will certainly increase on all platforms with time, it will never be as significant.
